Eye Wondered About That...

What are Floaters?

“Normal” floaters are clumps of cells or pieces of vitreous gel floating in the liquefied vitreous filling the back of the eye.  However, floaters can also be caused by blood vessels in the eye bleeding into the vitreous, or by early retina holes or detachments.  If you notice new floaters, a sudden increase in the number of floaters, or floaters associated with flashes of light you should make an appointment to see your eye doctor as soon as possible for an emergency dilated exam to rule out retinal detachment.

Did you know?

  • The eye can see seven million shades of color.
  • You blink 30 times a minute.  You can't help it - it's automatic.
  • It's impossible to keep your eyes opened when you sneeze!
  • Your eyeball is round and is the size of a ping pong ball.
  • To prevent the glare of light which has a fatiguing effect on the eyes, light fixtures in the bedroom should reflect light upwards as well as outwards, and not directly on the eyes.
  • To rest the eyes, lift them occasionally from close work and look into the distance.
  • Give rest to your tired eyes by applying two thin slices of cucumber as cool compress and relax as you do so.
